Creating Great Listings: Photography Guide

Equipment & Setup

  • Camera: Smartphone cameras work great! iPhone or Android with recent models.
  • Lighting: Natural daylight is best. Shoot near windows or outdoors in soft light.
  • Background: Use clean, neutral backgrounds. Remove clutter and distractions.
  • Tripod: Optional but helpful for steady shots. Many affordable phone tripods available.

What to Photograph

  • Main shot: Full item, well-lit, centered, neutral background (first photo shown in search)
  • Detail shots: Close-ups of brand names, controls, features, condition
  • Size reference: Item next to common objects (phone, ruler, hand) to show scale
  • Included accessories: All items that come with the rental
  • Condition disclosure: Any wear, scratches, or imperfections (builds trust!)
  • Usage examples: Item in use or styled attractively (optional but effective)

Photography Do's and Don'ts

DO:

  • Use natural lighting
  • Take 5-10 high-quality photos
  • Clean items before shooting
  • Show multiple angles
  • Use high resolution
  • Show accurate condition

DON'T:

  • Use blurry or dark photos
  • Over-edit or use filters
  • Misrepresent condition
  • Use stock photos
  • Include personal info
  • Shoot in messy areas

Pricing Strategy for Maximum Earnings

Research Competitive Pricing

Search for similar items in your area. Check their condition, age, and pricing. Position yourself competitively - slightly lower if your item is older, slightly higher if it's newer or in better condition.

Use Our Pricing Recommendations

Life4Rent analyzes thousands of listings to suggest optimal pricing. Our smart pricing tool considers:

  • Similar items in your location
  • Item age and condition
  • Seasonal demand patterns
  • Your rental history and reviews

Pricing Formula

A general rule of thumb for daily rental pricing:

  • Electronics/Tools: 3-5% of purchase price per day
  • Outdoor/Sports: 5-7% of purchase price per day
  • Party/Events: 7-10% of purchase price per day
  • Vehicles: 0.5-1% of vehicle value per day

Example: A $500 camera might rent for $15-25/day (3-5%). A $30,000 car might rent for $150-300/day (0.5-1%).

Optimize with Discounts

  • Weekly discount: Offer 10-15% off for 7+ day rentals
  • Monthly discount: Offer 20-30% off for 30+ day rentals
  • First-time renter: Offer small discount to build review history
  • Seasonal pricing: Increase during peak seasons, decrease in off-season

Calculate Your ROI

Track how many days per month your item needs to rent to break even or profit:

  • Item cost: $600
  • Listing is free, with no general owner rental commission. The base renter service fee is 10% of the rental subtotal, with a minimum of 1 in the listing currency before applicable adjustments. Eligible promotions, loyalty adjustments and taxes may affect the quote. Direct sales have a separate 5% commission; optional paid services are separate. Review the full breakdown before confirming.
  • Break-even: 22 rental days
  • After 22 days, it's pure profit!

  • Get repair quotes from professionals
  • Communicate calmly with the renter
  • Let our mediation team handle resolution

Building Your Reputation

Reviews Matter

Positive reviews are the #1 factor in booking decisions. Focus on:

  • Reliable service (on-time, as-described, clean items)
  • Fair problem resolution (don't nitpick minor issues)
